What is a LoRa Module?

A LoRa module is a device that provides wireless connectivity over the LoRaWAN protocol. LoRa is a wireless technology that offers long range, low power and secure data transmission for M2M and IoT applications. LoRa modules usually consists of a LoRa transceiver and an MCU followed by additional components like RF switches, LNAs, TXCOs etc.

LoRa modules consume very little power and have a long range of 2-5 km (urban) and up to 15 km (suburban). They are used in IoT devices that run on battery power and are connected to a large network spanning hundreds of nodes spread over a large area. 

Important parameters when looking for a LoRa module:

Frequency: The frequency used by Lora Technology is different in different countries. So based on the country of applications it is important to pick the frequency of the LoRa module. Click here to see LoRa frequency bands in various countries.

Range: This is the maximum distance up to which a LoRa module can transmit and receive wireless signals.

Data Rate: This is the maximum speed at which the LoRa module can transmit and receive data.

Modulation schemes: Modulation is the process of converting data into wireless signals so that it can be transmitted. The modulation technique used can affect transmission speed, amount of transferable data and range up to which data can be transferred. A LoRa module may support several modulation techniques for the transmission of data. 

Current consumption: LoRa modules consume very little power due to power saving technologies for battery-powered operation. They have significantly different power consumptions when in transmit/receive mode versus when in idle/sleep mode.

Interfaces: A LoRa module is connected to the device via an interface. A LoRa module may support several interfaces through which it can be controlled. Some common interfaces include I2C, UART, SPI etc.
